Chapter 18

‘When was the last time you rode a bike?’ Alex asked her.

Molly had been looking forward to getting a few chores done – like giving her clothes a proper wash, especially her tunic. For once, the team would be staying in the same hotel for two nights running. It was located just outside a town called Brioude, in the middle of the Auvergne, as the Tour made its way down to the Pyrenees and the mountain stages. She had intended to borrow one of the team’s washing machines. It was going to be the highlight of her day – that, and not having to pack her case for two days.

‘Why do you ask?’ she replied, her tone guarded.

‘Because I think it’s about time you got in the saddle again.’

‘I don’t think so. The last time I was on a bike I must have been about ten-years-old.’

‘Then it’s high time you got reacquainted.’

‘Why?’

‘It’s a good way to see the sights.’

Molly put her hands on her hips and glowered at him. ‘Haven’t you got a training ride to go on, or something?’

‘Been there, done that, got the T-shirt,’ he replied, with a cheeky grin, pulling at his BeSpoke top.

Today was the first of two rest days, which were spread equally throughout the race, and Molly had intended to spend some of it doing exactly that – resting – as well as doing the washing, and having a relaxing half hour with a book. But she was shocked to see that the morning had already disappeared and it was now lunchtime.

Alex had cornered her just as she was about to enter the dining room, which was unexpected considering they’d had little contact over the past couple of days apart from the treatments after each stage.

‘Alex,’ she warned. ‘I don’t think it’s a good idea.’

‘It’s true, you never forget how to ride a bike. Once you get on it, it’ll all come back to you.’

‘That’s not what I meant.’

The teasing expression left his face. ‘I know.’

‘Well, then,’ she retorted, expecting that to be an end to it.

She hadn’t factored Alex into the equation though, because as soon as lunch was done, he was at her side again. ‘We could always take Mick as a chaperone, if it’ll make you feel better?’

She narrowed her eyes at him. ‘Why do you want me to get on a bike?’

‘I want to show you Brioude and I thought the best and quickest way would be by bike.’

‘You don’t have to make it up to me, you know,’ she pointed out.

He shrugged and focused on a spot over her left shoulder. ‘I know, but it seems a shame to be only a couple of miles outside one of the prettiest villages in the Auvergne and not see it.’

‘Couldn’t we take a car, or walk?’

‘Can’t find any car keys. I think Chuck has hidden them. And walking would take too long. We’ve only got a couple of hours.’

Molly played her trump card. ‘I haven’t got a bike, and I don’t think any of the mechanics would be too pleased with me borrowing one of BeSpoke’s.
